What's Happening

Hello, San Diego! Here's the lowdown on all the cross-cultural events happening in San Diego!

On Saturday, Miramar College will host an Indian Ed Youth & Social Powwow. Other festivals (or festive gatherings) on Saturday include Fangaea Pop Culture and Fandom Convention at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley and a Multicultural Fair & Family Day in Lemon Grove. On Sunday, the House of Iran will hold its annual Lawn Program celebrating the Nowruz spring holiday. Next Thursday at the Tower Beach Club, Soirée en Egypte will include a singing performance from guest star Yasmina El-Abd and a traditional Egyptian dinner.

The 33rd San Diego Latino Film Festival is happening right now with a diverse array of shorts and feature films, as well as events celebrating Latin cultures and experiences. Next Thursday, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will screen the film Rapito (Kidnapped) at the Digital Gym. Next Friday, the weekend-long San Diego Arab Film Festival gets underway at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park.

There are a number of dance and music events to enjoy around town. Tonight, dutar master Oghlan Bakshi will perform at the La Jolla Community Center as part of the Center for World Music's Passport Concert Series. Remember, as a San Diego Participant Observer reader, you can get a discount if you use the code WVP10 when you buy your tickets! Also, tonight is Primavera Fest, featuring 12 Mexican regional banda bands performing at the Babylon Palace Banquet Hall in El Cajon. Saturday and Sunday, at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, the Ticitozaá Folklorico Dance Festival will take place. Saturday music events include an evening of Gypsy Jazz & Brazilian Choro music at Paper Moon performed by guitarists Olli Soikkeli and Cesar Garabini, and the Mexican indie rock band Enjabre at the Observatory in North Park. On Monday, the nearly week-long 19th Annual Indian Music & Dance Festival will commence at the JCC. Next Tuesday, Iranian setar master Kourosh Taghavi will give a free mini-concert at the Del Mar Library courtesy of the Center for World Music.

Other notable and interesting events include: a talk at San Diego Archaeological Center on Excavating Southern California’s Lost City on Saturday, the RefugeeNet Story Fest at St. Luke's Episcopal Church (also Saturday), Sunday's Doodle POP performance at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla, and a Sword Casting Class next Tuesday (location TBA).

Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!

Recipe of the Month

Our monthly recipe is for Poulet au Vinaigre, a delicious dish that hails from Lyon, France, but it is enjoyed throughout the country. Piquant and savory, the sauce created is truly delectable; all of the ingredients are common items used regularly in American households, and no special cooking techniques are required!

CD of the Month

Our International Music CD of the Month is Journey Across the Steppes by Oghlan Bakhshi.

Oghlan Bakhshi is known as one of the most prominent Turkmen singers and players of *dutar. When he was 9 years old, due to his bright talent and ability to perform Turkmen songs and sophisticated instrumental pieces, masters granted him the title “Oghlan Bakhshi.”

Book of the Month

Our Book of the Month is Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard by Kiran Desai. A delightfully sweet comic novel that ends in a raucous bang, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard is as surprising and entertaining as it is beautifully wrought.
